If you have attended a trade show before, you will know that it isn’t uncommon to leave with a bag full of goodies. But truth be told, these free goods are often unappealing and more times than not have little impact in terms of sales and profit for the company giving them away.
I sell car title loans in Los Angeles, so I get invited to all sorts of financial tradeshows, and I have a huge stash of utterly worthless and uninspiring tradeshow freebies that I give away to visitors to our office.
However, tradeshow giveaways don’t have to be this dismal. In fact, they do have the potential to get your brand or company’s name out there and even increase sales by bringing in new clients. However, to see a direct positive effect from giving away free gifts at your next trade show, you’ll need to clearly think out your strategy.
Follow these simple tips to maximize profits on your next tradeshow giveaway:
Create a Budget
Don’t give out anything your company or brand can’t afford as it’s unlikely you will make a profit or even break even from investing in expensive gifts. Choose gifts that are practically priced but appealing and take it from there.
Do Some Research
Look for studies online to see what works and doesn’t in terms of promotional giveaways. Find giveaways that have had a huge impact on profits and brainstorm ways in which your company or brand can mimic other companies’ success.

Use Common Logic
Before settling on the exact giveaways, use some common logic. Can you see people appreciating using the gifts? And can you see them linking the gift back to your company? If you can visualize these things, you will probably want to go ahead with the product and if not stay well away.
Remember to Include Your Brand
Too many times brands give free gifts away that fail to clearly indicate their brand’s name or what their company represents. Make sure whatever you give away it has your brand’s name clearly placed on it as well as a logo that demonstrates what your company can do for them.
Provide Contact Information
Even if you give the best free gift away ever, if it doesn’t include your contact information you are unlikely to see a positive impact on sales or revenue. Include your company’s website as well as a phone number on every product you give out. If this isn’t logistical for the product you’re giving away, place several business cards into its packaging or bag.
These may seem like obvious tips, but you’d be amazed at how many brands fail to effectively utilize them. Always plan your swag way in advance and do plenty of research. When done correctly, giving out free goods that highlight your brand can have tremendous potential for growing your business, so don’t be afraid to try it out.
